Greenwich crushes Trumbull in football opener

GREENWICH — During the preseason, Greenwich High School football coach John Marinelli mentioned AJ Barber as a receiver capable of stepping up and making plays.

Well, Marinelli was right on in his assessment.

Barber, a sophomore, helped set the tone of the Cardinals’ season-opener against Trumbull, catching three touchdowns from quarterback Gavin Muir in the first half.

Those three receptions, coupled by Ryan Raybuck’s interception return for a touchdown sparked Greenwich to a 42-7 win over FCIAC foe Trumbull in the season-opening game for both squads.

FOOTBALL: Ludlowe learning how to win, beats Westhill

FAIRFIELD — The Ludlowe football team is not used to winning.

The team won one game last season after winning none the year before.

That type of losing culture takes time to shake but Friday night at Taft Field, the Falcons took a huge step towards learning how to be a winning program, beating Westhill 29-21.

The win set off a celebration worthy of a state championship as the large student section streamed onto the field at the final whistle and kept on partying into the parking lot after the game.

Greenwich swimmers out to repeat as FCIAC, LL and Open champions

Entering its 2017 season with two straight State Open titles and seven consecutive Class LL championships to its ledger, the Greenwich High School girls swimming team added the FCIAC crown to the mix last fall.

Put them all together and the Cardinals accomplished the triple crown last season, winning the State Open, Class LL and FCIAC titles in convincing fashion.

Now the Cardinals are relying on five experienced seniors and one sensational sophomore to help continue their reign of supremacy in the conference and state.

“It was a special group last year,” said GHS coach Lorrie Hokayem, who is starting her fifth season at the helm. “Everything came together and we received contributions from all four classes. It was a really exciting year.”
