Seven softball teams are in to the FCIAC tournament with one more to go, so here’s a quick look at how things could work out following this afternoon’s games.
The big game on the slate is the Ridgefield Tigers vs. the Warde Mustangs at Warde at 4:30 p.m., with the winner qualifying for the tournament.
The Tigers are 7-7 in the league and currently hold down the eighth spot, but the Mustangs are 6-8 and with a win today, would not only tie the Tigers but jump past them in the standings via tiebreaker.
Here’s a run down of the other playoff teams
1 – Trumbull Eagles (14-0)
The Eagles are undefeated in league play and have the No. 1 seed for the tournament wrapped up. They’ll face another playoff-bound team, the Danbury Hatters, in the regular-season finale today at Danbury at 4:15 p.m.
2 – Ludlowe Falcons (12-2)
3 – St. Joseph Cadets (12-2)
Both Ludlowe and St. Joseph have secured quarterfinal home games and the Falcons, who beat St. Joseph this season, clinch the No. 2 seed with a win today. St. Joseph hosts Staples at 4 p.m.. while Ludlowe plays at Wilton at 5 p.m. The Cadets move up to No. 2 only if they win and Ludlowe loses. Otherwise, St. Joseph is No. 3.
4 – Stamford Black Knights (11-4)
The Knights have completed their regular season schedule and are locked in at No. 4 with a quarterfinal home game. Norwalk can tie Stamford with a win today, but the Knights own the head-to-head tiebreaker.
5 – Norwalk Bears (10-4)
Norwalk won’t play its final game until Sunday, when it hosts Darien at 12:30 p.m., but the Bears are in as the No. 5 seed. They can’t move up, but also can’t slide back with a loss, as they defeated the team directly behind them: Danbury
6 – Danbury Hatters (9-5)
Danbury will host the No. 1 seed at 4:15 today and will end up as either the No. 6 seed (with a win) or the No. 7 seed (with a loss and a Staples win).
7 – Staples Wreckers (8-6)
Staples plays at St. Joseph at 4 p.m., today. The Wreckers are in the tournament and can finish will finish at either No. 6 or No. 7.
8 – Ridgefield Tigers (7-7)
9 – Warde Warde (6-8)
As noted at the top of the story, Warde hosts Ridgefield today at 4:30 p.m. in what is a play-in game for the tournament. The winner is in at No. 8 and the loser will await the start of the state tournament.-
