Midway through their season-opening boys ice hockey game against Notre Dame-West Haven, the New Canaan Rams had fallen into a 2-0 hole and time seemed to be slipping away.

Then sophomore Carter Ellis hit the back of the net and the floodgates opened.

New Canaan scored five unanswered goals over the final 21-plus minutes and rallied for an impressive 5-2 victory over the Green Knights Monday night at the Darien Ice House.

It was a positive start in a season of high expectations for the Rams, who return 15 players from last year’s squad.

“Even for us seniors and juniors, it’s weird coming back after so long not playing, and we had a big crowd so everyone’s kind of buzzing a bit,” senior co-captain Gunnar Granito said. “Once we got that first one in, all the nerves were gone and everyone was just ready to go.”
